A straight fence needs one more post than it has sections. Rails run between each pair of posts, and pickets cover the length based on their width plus any gap.
Formula
Posts = ⌈Length ÷ Spacing⌉ + 1 · Pickets = ⌈Length × 12 ÷ (width + gap)⌉
Example
100 ft with posts every 8 ft needs 13 sections, 14 posts and 39 rails (3 per section). Solid 5.5 in pickets: 219.
