How it works

Each letter grade is converted to grade points (A = 4.0, B = 3.0 and so on), multiplied by the course's credit hours, then the total is divided by total credit hours. Courses without a credit value count as 3 credits.

Formula

GPA = Σ(grade points × credits) ÷ Σ credits

Example

A (3 cr), B+ (4 cr), A- (3 cr), B (3 cr): (12 + 13.2 + 11.1 + 9) ÷ 13 = 3.48.

Assumptions & limitations

Standard unweighted 4.0 scale.
Courses missing a credit value count as 3 credits.

Frequently asked questions

Does my school use the same scale?

Most US schools use this standard 4.0 scale, but some give A+ a 4.3 or skip minus grades. Check your school's handbook.

Are pass/fail classes included?

Usually not. Leave them out of the list.
