How it works

Every unit is first converted to a common base unit, then into the unit you want. Conversion factors use exact international definitions (for example, 1 inch = 2.54 cm exactly). US customary units are used for cups, pints and gallons.

Formula

Result = Value × (factor of From unit ÷ factor of To unit)

Example

6 feet = 1.8288 meters, because 1 foot is exactly 0.3048 m.
