How it works

The classic guideline keeps rent at about 30% of gross monthly income. We also cap rent plus other debts at 36% of income so existing payments don't squeeze your budget.

Formula

Max rent = min(Income ÷ 12 × 30%, Income ÷ 12 × 36% − debts)

Example

$60,000 income and $300 in debts: 30% rule = $1,500; debt limit = $1,500. Recommended max: $1,500/month.
