How it works
BMR is the energy your body needs to keep you alive at complete rest. We use the Mifflin–St Jeor equation, considered one of the most accurate for most adults.
Formula
BMR = 10 × kg + 6.25 × cm − 5 × age + 5 (male) or − 161 (female)
Example
A 32-year-old man, 5′10″ (70 in) and 170 lb, has a BMR of about 1,750 calories per day.
Assumptions & limitations
- Based on population formulas that may not fit athletes, pregnancy, children or medical conditions.
Frequently asked questions
Is BMR the same as calories I should eat?
No. Multiply BMR by an activity factor to get TDEE, your daily maintenance calories.
