How it works

Divide the area by the size of one tile, then add 10% (15% for diagonal layouts) for cuts, breakage and future repairs.

Formula

Tiles = ⌈ Area ÷ (tile L × tile W ÷ 144) × (1 + waste) ⌉

Example

A 10 × 8 ft floor is 80 sq ft. With 12 × 12 in tiles that's 80 tiles, or 88 with 10% extra.

Does grout width matter?

Slightly — grout lines reduce tile count by a small amount, so the waste allowance covers it.
